Derby Time: Classic Mint Julep

Posted on May 4, 2012 by Glutenfreeda

The traditional Kentucky Derby beverage of choice, the Mint Julep is a simple combination of bourbon, mint and a pinch of sugar. So kick back, relax, imagine sitting on a porch swing and enjoy the race!

Traditional Mint Julep
20 mint leaves, plus more for garnish
2 teaspoons simple syrup (or mint-infused simple syrup for an extra minty-kick)
2 ounces bourbon*
Crushed ice

Put mint leaves and simple syrup in a Mint Julep cup or old-fashioned glass (or a mason jar, if you’re feeling homely). Muddle leaves and simple syrup until the leaves are well bruised- a minute or two.

Add the bourbon and stir well. Add crushed ice to the glass and stir until the glass becomes a little frosty (easier to see on a metal Julep cup than a traditional glass).

Serve immediately with a garnish of mint leaves.
